  What is broaching?

How is does broaching compare to milling, drilling, lathing  or grinding?

How important is having the right broaching tool?

What is broaching?

  • Broaching is the process of efficiently removing material, shaping and/or finishing metal parts constantly and precisely in quantity.
  • Broaching is one of the most productive precision-machining processes available.

  •  Broaching is a machining process that pulls or pushes a cutting tool over of through a surface being machined.

How is does broaching compare to milling, drilling or grinding?

  • Generally when we think of metalworking, we think of the traditional methods  of metal cutting /working; mills, drills, lathes or grinders.

  • Broaching is a more efficient specialized method of removing material, finish specific metal parts, or shape metal.

  • Not only is it more efficient and effective than traditional methods, it is much more profitable when the demand is for high volume, close tolerance or precision work. It is sometimes the only method that is feasible when working a part that is unusual or intricate.

How important is having the right broaching tool?

  • The broaching tool is what makes the broaching process work. The design of the tool is of utmost importance. They must be tailored for the specific job, they can not be ordered from a catalog or picked up from a parts shelf.
  • The tool is a series of teeth of cutting edges in a fixed relation to each other. The tool is either pushed or pulled over the work piece. Each tooth is the broaching tool is successively stepped to the each tooth take a deeper "bite" out of the work piece, than the tooth that proceeded it. Each tooth may have its own function, such as roughing, semi-finishing and finishing teeth, thus usually enabling single pass machining.
